Quality counts: high seas marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean

Designating vast marine protected areas (MPAs) of several million square kilometers in remote parts of the high seas beyond national jurisdiction may be favorable as well as inevitable. Yet, it is not unproblematic from conceptual, scientific, or political points of view.
