Early 2000, risk-based asset integrity management was proposed, which is currently practiced. In risk-based integrity management, system integrity is intermittently assessed and maintained throughout the design life. The recommended integrity inspection and maintenance interval are determined considering vulnerability of the system and resource availability. It may vary from six months to six years. This approach is useful but not very beneficial for highly hazardous systems, which are operating remotely in vulnerable environmental and operational conditions. A contemporary approach considering real-time condition monitoring and integrity management is briefly introduced here. Knowledge and technology gaps that need to be filled to make this approach practical are also highlighted.
