Sir Redmond Barry is famous for being the presiding judge at a number of major trials, not least the one that sent Ned Kelly to the execution gallows. The harshness with which he conducted his criminal trials was legendary and personally he maintained great animosity towards anyone who annoyed him, but there was another more positive side to Barry. He was an outstanding supporter of education and culture, putting great effort into advancing the standing of the University of Melbourne, the Art Gallery and the Public Library. Thanks to Sue Reynolds, who has turned her award-winning PhD thesis into this book, we must now add the Supreme Court of Victoria Library to Barry's list of worthy causes.
