This essay reviews the benefits and imperatives for the use of digital technology to deliver drill that accelerates the acquisition of basic skills such as oralcy, numeracy and literacy, especially in early education, and argues that the computing profession has a duty to establish standards for the representation of both the static and dynamic data on which such drill is necessarily based in order to mitigate the otherwise inevitable stultifying of the technique by purely commercial enterprises.
