According to his Journal, Abel Janszoon Tasman planted his flag and took formal possession of the land, now called Tasmania, on the 3rd of December, 1642.
Unfortunately, the exact position of his anchorage was not fixed by bearings to, or angles between the various headlands, islands, or prominent features in the vicinity, but in other respects the journal is so complete and is so clearly written that the historic spot at which the flag was planted can, I think, be located within a few yards. As a memorial to posterity and to the inhabitants of this country a stone was erected by the Royal Society of Tasmania, 1923, near the landing place.
Includes extracts from Tasman's journal.
