Conal McCarthy’s Te Papa might appear initially to be a pedestrian product. Published to mark 20 years since the opening of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (known as Te Papa), it addresses exactly the sort of questions that such a book might be expected to: How did this museum come into being? What has been learned along the way? What has changed, and what might we expect in the future? All of this may sound a little dull to those outside the museological bubble and perhaps it would be if it were not for the fact that Te Papa is anything but a pedestrian museum.
