The Tasmanians and the Scientists

In 1846 Captain John Lort Stokes, R.N., published his two volume Discoveries in Australia about a long surveying expedition in the southern hemisphere between 1841 and 1843 in the HMS Beagle. He spent several months in waters around Tasmania putting ashore in several out-of-theway places including Preservation Island in Bass Strait where a small community had been established by sealers and Aboriginal women.
