The Salvation Army has a long relationship with the members of the Armed Forces in Australia. The Red Shield Defence Services were established as a response to the start of the First World War in 1914. Salvation Army chaplains were sent all over the world, to offer practical, emotional and spiritual aid to servicemen. The ministry and interaction between service personnel and Salvation Army chaplains at Gallipoli was to become a defining moment in the role and future of the organisation in Australia.
