Nitrates provide the body with an additional source of nitric oxide which is responsible for vasodilation. Through dilating coronary vessels, nitrates improve myocardial perfusion, reducing myocardial ischaemia and associated ischaemic pain. Due to its rapid onset of action and established efficacy, sublingual GTN is considered the drug of choice for the acute relief of an attack of chronic stable or unstable angina.
