This paper summarises contemporary projects related to Antarctica’s protected areas that are being undertaken by researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences and under the SCAR Standing Committee on the Humanities and Social Sciences (SC-HASS). Research being undertaken by environmental historians, social psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, economists, legal scholars, and political scientists provides important socio-cultural and political context for any discussions about protection, and the values that underlie the designation of protected areas.
