Service mapping in the Brighton Municipality

The Salvation Army and Brighton Council have commissioned this report to document and analyse services available to families in the Brighton municipality.

Brighton is situated approximately 20 kilometres from the Hobart CBD. The Brighton local government area includes the outer suburbs of Hobart of Bridgewater, Old Beach and Gagebrook as well as the rural townships of Brighton, Pontville, Tea Tree and Dromedary.

The Salvation Army and Brighton Council were aware that there are a number of agencies providing services to families in this area. The project involved sourcing previous reports that had provided similar information in the past and consulting with organisations regarding their current set of services.

As well as providing a comprehensive dossier of services to be used to improve access to services and information sharing among related services, this report is designed to assist in the strategic development of services for both the general community and for vulnerable families.

Brighton’s industrial and commercial growth is among the fastest in the State. Over the past few years numerous businesses have relocated to Brighton. Companies such as Polyfoam, Stramit Industries, Tasmanian Freight Services, Woolworths and Statewide Refrigerated Services are providing job opportunities for local residents. The State Government has recently constructed an $80 million transport hub with the relocation of the railway yards from Hobart to a new site at Bridgewater. The hub will encourage further industrial growth with manufacturing, transport and brewing companies indicating their intentions to establish in the area. This growth, as well as the growing horse training and intensive agriculture industries, will provide new opportunities for employment and ancillary business development.
