The fishery has recreational and commercial components, the latter generating an estimated $184.5 million p.a. ($65 million directly from landed value) and 1350 full-time-equivalent jobs in the harvesting and processing sectors in 2002. Recreational fishing also has a significant impact on the economy of regional centres with a recent national survey estimating the direct economic impact of all recreational fishing in Tasmania at $50 million. The Tasmanian rock lobster fishing industry is a source of significant economic growth to the State, with an 24.1% and 16.3% increase in the value of landed product in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Annual rate of growth in revenue has been matched by an increase in capital value at a compound rate of 18% per annum over the last decade. This increase in economic benefit has come at a time when some other marine industries in Tasmania have exhibited stalled growth in profitability and a loss of capital value.
