This report examines the concept of the dark (night) sky and the use of artificial light at night (ALAN) as a form of pollution. It examines the impact of loss of access to dark skies from cultural, spiritual, recreational, economic and scientific perspectives and how increasing exposure to light pollution and reducing access to dark skies are likely to exacerbate existing environmental justice issues.
This report is an output of Impact Priority area 1 (IP1): Sustainable People-Environment Interactions of the Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub, which is funded through the National Environmental Science Program.
