Tasmania has an enormous potential for cool climate viticultural development. There are many soil types with great suitability for Pinot Noir (PN), Pinot Gris (PG), Chardonnay (CH), Sauvignon Blanc (SB) and increasingly Shiraz (SH). The beauty of the island as a cool climate wine growing region rests in the great variety and general suitability of its soils, leading to a stunning diversity of exquisite cool climate wines. The highly diverse soil–climate–terrain system or ‘terroir’ which provides an almost unparalleled opportunity for Tasmania to market its complex, premium cool climate wines to agri-food tourists and international wine markets.
