This thesis is concerned with a study of the ionic relations and electrical properties of root cells in both intact growing roots and in root tissue segments of Vicia faba. A picture of the ionic state of the cells is built up from the measurement of intracellular potentials, ion concen trations and ion fluxes. The active or passive transport of each ion was considered using a criterion based on electro chemical theory, and an attempt was made to confirm these results by a study of the metabolic effects on potassium fluxes and the intracellular potential.
