This thesis describes studies into the synthesis, characterisation and reactivity of samarium(II) and (Ill) halide, alkyl and amide complex~s derived from the modified porphyrinogens meso-octaethyl-trans-dioxaporphyrinogen, Et8O2N2H2, and trans-N,N'-dimethyl-meso-octaethylporphyrinogen, Et8NMe2H2. The macrocycles themselves and various Group 1 metal derivatives that are accessed in the preparation of the target lanthanide complexes are also described in relation to their synthesis, characterisation and reactivity.
