Physical chemistry of solutions of large organic ions in molten pyridinium chloride.

Cryoscopy, density, surface tension, ultrasonic velocity and absorption, viscosity and conductance studies have been made for 0-0.2 molalcetyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride solutions in molten pyridinium chloride at 155.0 ° . A transition that occurred around 0.06m with all the measurements has been interpreted in terms of micellization. Only at 0.12m was a constant micellar size distribution reached. An ultrasonic relaxation with frequency 40 mc/sec was associated with the micelle formation process. In addition, the solvation mechanism was well described by the hydrophobic hydration concepts of aqueous chemistry, BO that molten pyridinium chloride might be more profitably considered as an associated liquid rather than an ionic melt.
