Between Fire and Flood

‘Between Fire and Flood’ was a solo commissioned project that responded to ideas of climate and atmosphere on the north west coast of Tasmania. Through a series of photographic works ‘Between Fire and Flood’ aimed to counter-balance emotive states with those of nature, such as loss, growth and change, and to poetically represent the complexities of internal and external states of mind where mind and nature coalesce. Using lens-based source material of the north west coast of Tasmania produced over 24 months, the project created affective artworks that capture the atmosphere of this place. Each work aimed to portray the intensity of a specific location and moment while also evoking broader connections. Printed onto aluminium and harnessing reflected light, these carefully constructed and layered images provide a glimpse of a luminous world where the visible surface is invested with a resonance of the unseen. Approaching the landscape and its elements as agents with their own histories and acts of making allowed for the layering in the work being viewed as a collaboration between the artist and the place. Navigating internal emotional states of being though connection to place is deeply relevant at this point in time when we are flooded by information from competing voices that can result in great anxiety. The production of work for this exhibition allowed for the testing of new ways of evoking atmosphere and connection to place through landscape representation.
