This paper was one of four presentations by invitation at the forum 'Being There: Creative Engagements with Place' held during Tasmanian Living Artists Week 2007. It is an autobiographical reflection on being a theory-based doctoral candidate in an art school. In line with Tudor's research interests in visual art practice and the environment, this paper follows the analogy of a flowing river to tell of the ways this writer has attempted to apply her practice to the 'real world' through incorporating interviews, case studies and exhibition reviews into her research methodology.
