In Australia considerable time and effort have been spent upon investigation into the stevedoring industry. Saddled as it is with peculiar organisational structures and fluctuating demands for labour, and more recently with redundancy problems which have come as a result of increased mechanisation of stevedoring procedures, the industry has had, from an industrial relations point of view, a history which is often well described as turbulent.
